The Missouri Valley Football Conference (MVFC) has made significant changes to its scheduling format, aimed at creating a more balanced and exciting experience for its student-athletes. According to MVFC Commissioner Patty Viverito, the conference will operate on a rotational basis, ensuring that each school faces every team in the conference at least every four out of six years.

This new approach is designed to achieve two key goals: first, to ensure that student-athletes see every team in the league more than once during their four-year tenure with the conference; and second, to preserve some of the traditional matchups on an annual basis. Viverito explained that while rivalries between schools in the Dakotas will be maintained, other matchups will rotate annually to guarantee that each school faces every team at least every four out of six years.

The changes were sparked by Murray State's decision to join the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) as a multisport league. As a result, the Racers were looking for a new home for their football program, which led to an invitation from the MVFC. The addition of Murray State will strengthen FCS football in the Midwest and cement the MVFC's position as the premier conference in the nation.

In terms of scheduling, Viverito noted that the conference has no previous arrangement with Murray State joining the MVC, but saw an opportunity to strengthen the league through this partnership. With the Racers' addition, the MVFC will turn long-standing traditional games into conference rivalries and open up new opportunities for exciting matchups throughout the league.

The move is expected to bring stability and growth to FCS football in the Midwest, and Commissioner Viverito believes it makes good sense for the conference, its member institutions, fans, and most importantly student-athletes. The MVFC's Presidents Council voted to extend an offer of membership to Murray State on April 1, with the Racers set to become the league's 12th member in 2023.
